certified translation or not . . . is the question When getting a document translated into Spanish it’s important to understand a few things. First, a translation can be done in two different ways. One is to perform a literal translation of the document. When this is done, many times the client that is reading the English document comments on problems with the grammar and that the document doesn’t make a lot of sense. This is because a literal translation does not make complete sense when going from one language to another. The other type of translation would be to translate the document and convey its intent. This will allow the English speaking clients the ability to understand what is being said in the document in regards to its purpose. Second, a translation in Mexico can be done as a courtesy copy or as a certified copy. A courtesy copy is done to give the reader the ability to understand the idea of the document, but is just that, a courtesy copy. If a document is required by the Notario for review or to be recorded it will typically need to be “certified” copies. The cost for a certified copy will run around $20.00 per page so you can imagine that this can add up very quickly when translating large documents like articles of incorporation.
